Directed by George Cukor, Wild Is the Wind is the story of Gioia (Anna Magnani) who emigrates from Italy to live at a sheep ranch in Nevada, with her new husband Gino (Anthony Quinn), who is the widower of her sister. They soon argue about her continuing use of Italian and his treatment of animals. It becomes apparent that Gino still pines for his late wife and want to change Giola to be like her. Giola falls in love with the young hired hand.

Producer Raymond Strauss purchased to rights to the 1947 Italian film Furia, which was was directed by Anna Magnani's then-husband, Goffredo Alessandrini and based upon a novel by Vittorio Nino Novarese. Wild Is The Wind screenplay was adapted by Arnold Schulman.
